Effortless MacOS App Updates with Pckgr’s “Update Only” Feature

Hey everyone,

We have had great feedback from customers testing out our new MacOS applications! Our first major piece of feedback was to add an Update Only component like we have with Windows. With this feedback in mind, we got to work and have added in an Update Only feature as requested.

Let’s take a look at how this feature works and just how easy it is to update your MacOS applications with Update Only deployments.

What is “Update Only”?

The Update Only feature does exactly what it says—it checks if the application already exists on the device, and if it does, it updates the app to the latest version. If the app isn’t found, it simply reports back with “Application not detected.” No unnecessary installations, no extra work.

This makes the whole process faster, more efficient, and ensures your MacOS fleet is always running the latest software.

Why Use Update Only?

Here are a few reasons why this feature is perfect for keeping your apps up to date:

  • No Unnecessary Installs: It only attempts to update existing apps, meaning devices without the application won’t be affected.
  • Update Unmanaged Software: Target outdated software that was installed by end users.
  • Accurate Reporting: You’ll get clear results if the app isn’t found, so you know exactly what’s happening on each device.

How to Use the “Update Only” Feature for MacOS

Let’s walk through the steps to show how simple it is to use Update Only for updating your MacOS applications.

Step 1: Log Into Your Pckgr Dashboard

First, log in to your Pckgr account and head over to the App Library. Select the tenant for which you want to manage updates.

Step 2: Select a MacOS Application to Update

From the MacOS section of your App Library, choose the app you want to update. For this example, let’s say we’re updating Google Chrome.

Step 3: Enable “Update Only”

Now, here’s the easy part! When you choose Google Chrome, enable the Update Only option by toggling the slider. This ensures that Pckgr will check if the app is installed on each device before attempting to update it.

Step 4: Deploy the Update

Once you’ve selected Update Only, click the “Deploy” button to push the update through Intune. View the deployment in Intune and assign to devices or users. Pckgr will now scan the target devices to see if they already have Google Chrome installed.

  • If Chrome is found, Pckgr will proceed with updating it to the latest version.
  • If Chrome isn’t found, the status will report back as “Application not detected.”

Monitoring Your Deployment

After deployment, you can head over to Device Status in Intune to monitor the update progress. You’ll see a list of devices where the app was successfully updated, and any that reported “Application not detected.” This gives you a clear view of your update rollout.

Why This Feature is a Game-Changer

  • Efficiency: You’re only updating what needs to be updated. Devices without the app won’t go through any unnecessary steps.
  • Better Reporting: You’ll know exactly which devices have the app installed and which don’t, thanks to the clear feedback from Intune.
  • Seamless Updates: The Update Only feature is built to work quietly in the background, so users won’t be interrupted by unnecessary installations.
