Important Update to Winget Pre-Install for New Device Deployments

As part of our commitment to ensuring seamless deployments, Pckgr has deployed a critical update to our Winget Pre-Install setup, following changes introduced with Winget version 1.9.25180. This update enhances the reliability of application installations for new devices deploying via Autopilot, addressing a recent compatibility issue with Microsoft’s required MS Redistributable version.

What Happened?

After Microsoft’s release of Winget 1.9.25180, a higher version of the MS Redistributable became necessary for Winget to function correctly when used by the system account. Without this update, Winget would be unable to install applications on new devices — an issue our team identified when observing failed deployments during initial Autopilot setups.

Here’s what was occurring:

  1. New clients deploying through Autopilot had devices where the Winget Pre-Install process was installing the latest Winget version.
  2. However, the MS Redistributable installed on these new devices remained an older version, incompatible with the requirements of Winget 1.9.25180.

This led to deployment failures specifically on new devices, as existing devices didn’t encounter the issue.

How Pckgr Resolved the Issue

After diagnosing the root cause, the Pckgr team implemented an update to the Winget Pre-Install package. The revised version now installs MS Redistributable version 14.40.33816.0, ensuring compatibility with the latest Winget requirements for new device deployments.

Updating Your Winget Pre-Install Package

As devices already deployed aren’t affected by this issue, we have chosen not to force an update for all Winget Pre-Install packages. Instead, users needing the update can easily apply it through the Pckgr application library:

  1. Go to your Pckgr application library.
  2. Locate Winget Pre-Install.
  3. Click the menu button next to the Winget Pre-Install entry and select “Update Winget Pre-Install.”

This process ensures that new devices deployed via Autopilot will have the correct MS Redistributable version installed, preventing deployment disruptions.

Discover the Pckgr Private Repository: Enhanced Reliability Beyond Winget

As a solution for those seeking even greater control over application deployments, Pckgr now offers our Private Repository. This premium feature hosts and manages application installers directly on Pckgr’s infrastructure, allowing for more reliable, independent installations that bypass Winget entirely. Ideal for environments needing stability, the Private Repository enables you to:

  • Avoid External Dependencies: All applications are hosted within Pckgr’s secure infrastructure, eliminating risks from changes in vendor URLs or third-party hosting issues.
